Tinkering, pattern sniffing, and other things mathematical

As part of a professional development focus on literacy and numeracy with CORE Education, St Matthews Early Childhood Centre in Hastings selected to implement mathematical activities in their mixed aged centre that enhanced oral language. They chose 'designing, tinkering and inventing', 'pattern sniffing' and 'measuring' - concepts contained within Te Kākano framework (p. 3, Book 18, Mathematics, Kei Tua o Te Pae).

Over eight weeks the teachers gave these activities special attention while working alongside the children in their daily programme. They made sure children were the explorers, photographers, and researchers for these experiences.

“We were impressed by the rich language that began to flow from the children with every experience we introduced”.

At the end of the focus the teachers created the following presentation that described their process and evaluated the learning. This was shown to parents, who were impressed with work the children had done and the richness of learning happening in the centre. Inspired by this, the teachers are now planning further presentations as a way of making children’s learning visible.
